National Healthy and Safe Swimming Week!

Every year the week before Memorial Day is the designated National Healthy and Safe Swimming week, as declared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The beginning of summer is the perfect time to refresh children and adults on suggestions to stay safe in the water this year, since pools across the Nation are opening.

Prevent Drowning!

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1-4 years old.

1. Make sure everyone in the pool knows how to swim.

2. Use life jackets, when necessary.

3. The water should be supervised by an adult at all times.

4. The adult providing the supervision should be able to properly perform CPR, if necessary.

Prevent Chemical Poisonings!

1. Read all directions on pool chemicals.

2. Only add chemicals to the pool water when the pool is empty of swimmers.

3. Store chemicals in a safe, secure location away from children.

General Swimming Safety Tips:

1. Avoid swimming if you are experiencing diarrhea.

2. Reapply sunscreen every hour.

3. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

4. Don’t swallow the pool water!

Swimming can be an excellent form of physical activity, but it is necessary to be educated on how to handle any accidents should they occur.
